Football Drills for Receivers

This section contains drill techniques for receivers in football. Offensive receiver drill techniques are critical to identifies the primary skills that all football receivers need to develop and become proficient at. Football receivers are critical component of any offense and can provide game changing plays. Receiver drills are important part of training to tech them proper reaction to the action of the defensive backs.

 

We have outlined following football receiver drill techniques in detail:

FOOTBALL RECEIVER 1 ON 1 DRILL

 

Offensive recever 1 on 1 drill

Objective: : Teach the player to get off the line of scrimmage and past the defender in the most efficient manner.

Coaching Points: The receiver will take the proper stance and start against a defender that is playing:

  • Nose on
  • Inside shade
  • Outside shade

The receiver will ward off blows and take the line of least resistance to get past the defender and run the pass pattern. The receiver will do this by using:

  • Head and shoulder fake
  • Fake block
  • Hit and slide off defender
  • Scramble and come-up
  • Run around him

The receiver shall be careful to maintain body control at all times and not be delayed by the defender.

 

OFFENSIVE RECEIVER 7 ON 7 HOLDUP DRILL

 

Offensive receiver 7 on 7 drill

Objective: To teach the receiver to get off the line of scrimmage against a defender at the line of scrimmage.

Coaching Points: All receivers will use proper splits, stance and starts. They will read the defense and recognize the defender and pass him, using the same techniques as in the 1 on 1 Bump Drill.

Eqiupment: A football and seven scrimmage vests.

 

OFFENSIVE RECEIVER POST DRILL WITH LINEBACKER

 

Offensive receiver post drill

Objective: To teach the receiver to get open.

Coaching Points: The quarterback runs dropback, roll out, sprint out and play action movements. When the linebackers move with the flow of play, the receivers will move into the open seams.

Eqiupment: A football and defenders with scrimmage vests.

 

OFFENSIVE RECEIVER DOGFIGHT DRILL

 

Offensive receiver dogfight drill

Objective: To teach the receivers to be aggressive in fighting for the ball when it is in the air and to keep their eye on it until caught.

Coaching Points: Passer must put the ball up between the receivers so that they must battle to get possession. Vary height and velocity of the throw.

Equipment: Footballs.

 

OFFENSIVE RECEIVER 1 ON 1 STALK BLOCK

 

Offensive receiver 1 on 1 stalk block drill

Objective: To teach the receiver to stalk block on a play-action or reverse play.

Coaching Points: The receiver will move downfield and turn in. He will move towards the defender and take proper position. He will set himself in a stance to block the defender without being knocked down or without clipping. The block allows the receiver to screen the defender without getting knocked into the ball carrier.

Equipment: Hand-held push-back dummy.
