Football Drills for Defensive Backs

This section contains drill techniques for defensive backss in football. These football drill techniques are critical to identifies the primary skills that all defensive backs need to develop and become proficient at. Defensive backs drills are important part of training to tech them proper reaction to the action of the receivers.

 

We have outlined following defensive backs football drill techniques in detail:

DEFENSIVE BACK 1 ON 1 DRILL

 

Defensive back 1 on 1 drill

Objective: : To teach proper technique of alignment and coverage against a receiver.

Coaching Points: By using a sideline, teach defender when to align on receiver’s outside shoulder and when to be on inside shoulder. As receiver releases, instruct defensive back on proper method to retreat and maintain cushion.

Eqiupment: A sideline or line chalked on the field.

 

DEFENSIVE BACK 7 ON 7 DRILL

 

Defensive back 7 on 7 drill

Objective: To teach the defensive backs proper alignment on deployed receivers.

Coaching Points: Defenders must recognize varying positions of offensive receivers and coordinate their alignment with linebackers. Check on line up position and first step to area of responsibility.

Eqiupment: A football and seven scrimmage vests

 

FORMATION RECOGNITION DRILL

 

Defensive back formation recognition drill

Objective: To allow defensive backs to see and recognize all types of offensive formations.

Coaching Points: As a full offensive team changes to different formations, defensive backs must adjust their alignment. Make sure backs know who has containment and their areas of responsibility. After checking all formations, alter them with shifts and motion so that defenders learn to adjust quickly.

Eqiupment: A football and four scrimmage vests.

 

DEFENSIVE BACK WAVE DRILL

 

Defensive back wave  drill

Objective: To teach the defensive backs and linebackers to move backward rapidly and to change direction without taking their eyes off the ball.

Coaching Points: Form four or five lines facing coach. Keep 10 to 15 yards away from defenders, fake pass right, fake pass left. After several fakes, throw ball. When one intercepts it, the others should form interference and run the ball back to the starting point.

Equipment: A football.

 

DEFENSIVE BACK SKATE DRILL

 

Defensive back skate drill

Objective: To teach defensive backs to protect themselves from linemen or backs coming at them while they are moving laterally or in the open field.

Coaching Points: The defensive back must meet the oncoming blocker with a strong rip up under the chest of the blocker, and by forcing the head of the blocker with his open hand. Defensive back must keep his outside leg free in order to maintain leverage while shedding each blocker and moving to meet the ball carrier or next blocker.

Equipment: None.
